Brunswick has such a hometown feel to it. It’s one of the things we love most about downtown, and one of the very reasons for that is the 20 plus year presence of Daddy Cate’s Coffee. It is such a welcoming place with such wonderful aromas that greet you when you open the door. It feels like you’ve popped in to say hi to your Aunt DeeDee.

DeeDee Cate

And that’s just the crux of it: it’s not at all unlikely that DeeDee Cate’s smiling, happy face will be the one that greets you when you come by.

DeeDee and her husband R.V. started this café in 2002 when a friend suggested that downtown needed a coffee shop. Brunswick was a different place in 2002 still suffering from the scourge of what so many small towns were feeling – the business was all moving to the mall and big box chain land.

But it was people like DeeDee and R.V. who believed in the Mom and Pop shop and believed in their community to stick it and help turn downtown Brunswick into the wonderful, walkable town it is today.

The business is still a family affair with R.V. handling the behind the scenes day to day, DeeDee running front of house and her sister on the socials.

So What’s Good Here?

Coffee. Oh my goodness, the coffee! It’s some of my favorite in the Golden Isles. Organic and fair trade it really is a delight to have any time of day. Have it with a bacon, egg and cheese croissant and you’re bound to have a good day. They have a rotating supply of muffins, scones and cinnamon rolls that are just delightful.

If you’re in town for lunch, you have to get a Daddy Dawg! It’s a quarter pound all beef dog topped with chili, cheese and slaw – just like I like it. Yum! There’s a great variety of sandwiches including grilled tuna melts, clubs, pimento cheese, egg salad and so much more.

They have great outdoor seating, and the Glynn Academy kids love to come after school and get milk shakes and floats. It really is the home town hangout. So where did that Daddy Cate’s name come from?? Struggling to come up with a fitting name, one night the Cates’ son had a friend over. The friend looked across the yard to R.V. and hollered, “Hey Daddy Cate!”. Well that was it. A legend was born, and we are so happy they planted their roots in downtown Brunswick. They are real home town icons. Stop in and say hey from Brunswick Eats.
