It’s the Wee Pub. The name alone should evoke home and happiness. And it does. We moved from Atlanta to the Golden Isles at the tail end of the pandemic years when Millennials were flooding the home market and turning competition for homes into a blood sport. Like a lot of people, we made an offer on a house sight unseen (after a brief tour over FaceTime).
We came the next weekend to see our new home in person and stayed at our favorite hotel on Jekyll Island. We were full of excitement and a bit of trepidation, and on this brisk October evening we found ourselves in the Wee Pub in the Beach Village. The air was charged with a warm fuzzy feeling and the buzz was all about UGA’s epic year in football as they took on and crushed their Florida rivals. We sat at the bar and fell in love with the Golden Isles like never before, and it happened right there, that October night in an Irish Pub over fish and chips with malt vinegar and a Silver Bluff Mexican Lager (or 2 or 3).

Jekyll Island is still our vacation spot of choice. It just happens to be a half hour away as opposed to 6. And Wee Pub is still our restaurant of choice on Jekyll.
***Note: Wee Pub has 3 locations – Jekyll, Brunswick and St. Mary’s, but only Jekyll and St. Mary’s remained a Kevin McGarvey run operation. Kevin started the Brunswick location some 20 years ago but sold it in 2020. Sadly, we lost Kevin in early 2025. This article is a review of McGarvey’s Wee Pub Beach (Jekyll) only. We have never been to the Brunswick location.

Award Winning Flavors
Is it wrong for me to start with dessert? Because Wee Pub has so many great dishes and awards, but they are very consistent winners in Taste of Glynn‘s dessert category for variations on their bread pudding. Y’all this is seriously the best bread pudding I’ve had outside of New Orleans (which, of course, cannot be beat). I don’t always save room for dessert or order it, but believe me: DO NOT MISS THE BREAD PUDDING HERE! It’s just the right amount of sweet and spice and bread to sauce ratio. I just love it!
What else do we love here? Honestly, we always tell everyone that we’ve never had anything we didn’t like here. Start with the melt-in-your-mouth homemade crab dip with hot tortilla chips. If you’re in a soup and salad mood, you can’t go wrong with the loaded baked potato soup – I mean we are talking about Irish pub food here – so good! The chili Cormac has a unique flavor (may be an acquired taste), and the Ahi tuna salad is just amazing.
The burgers are charred to perfection. The sandwich portions are very generous, fresh and tasty. Cassie loves the Philly and I think it’s the best Reuben in the Golden Isles. The fish and chips are my absolute go-to, but if it’s a chilly day, get the Cottage Pie. It’s similar to Shepherd’s Pie with mashed potatoes, cheese and gravy served over seasoned beef, carrots and peas. Makes my mouth water 🤤. Can’t decide? Have a half sammy and cup of soup or salad. They also have a nice kid’s menu.
