I was familiar with St. Simons Crêpes from (guess where?) St. Simons, where they have occupied a little place tucked away on Mallery Street in the back of the Pier Village Market for four years now. I frequently stop in for breakfast, while people are waiting for 30-plus minutes to eat at Palmer’s Café (also worth the wait). But sometimes I’m just hangry and grab a hangry man crepe, which includes scrambled eggs, pepper jack cheese, chopped bacon, garlic aioli, and ham. It really hits the spot.

Hangry Man Crepe

We were just launching the Brunswick Eats YouTube channel when St. Simons Crêpes opened up a SECOND location in downtown Brunswick on Newcastle Street. Perfect timing. I called up the owner, Renato, to see if we could film an episode there. He was game so I grabbed the boys and we came crashing in. The Brunswick location is a great size with ample seating in a beautiful historic building next door to Arté Pizza.

This location is not only larger but they offer beer and wine as well. Renato met us at the door. He and the staff could not be any friendlier. My on air talent, Buda, ordered the Crêpe Brûlée while The Beard ordered the Cali Brunch. Alas, I was busy filming, but I would reap my rewards in a big way later on.

Renato told us the back story. He grew up in Hungary (hungry) and wanted to bring some European culture to the Golden Isles. His grandmother, like a lot of grandmothers, spent Sunday in the kitchen pumping out one delicious dish after another often served with a homemade crêpe. So Renato thought crêpes would be just what the area needed. Being in 21st Century America he tried countless recipes from the internet for gluten free crêpes all which turned out to also be flavor free. Feeling defeated, he called up his grandma and got the time honored recipe. Don’t mess with grandma’s recipe. It was a smash!

These crêpes are so good, there is even a couple who drives up to St. Simons from Jacksonville JUST TO GET LUNCH! So we shot the episode which you can see below. Buda adored his Crêpe Brûlée which is a slice of cheesecake with fresh strawberries, whipped cream, strawberry syrup, vanilla pudding and caramelized sugar torched right on the spot. Buda is renowned for his cheesecakes so that is truly a compliment. The Beard’s Cali Brunch which includes cheddar and mozzarella, scrambled egg, spicy chipotle aioli, turkey and avocado. You can see that he clearly loved it. Hoovered it up and went to order dessert.

Well I’m filming and by this point am getting really hungry. I watched all of these being made and eaten with such delight. I called it a scene, turned off my camera and ordered the thing I had been craving since before I walked in the door: The Garden Goddess. I’m not some kind of vegetarian, rather just a junkie for the spinach, feta, roasted red pepper combo. It’s one of my favorite pizza flavors as well (speaking of which St. Simons Crêpes also serves their famous Creperoni 🍕🍕). To this day, and particularly as I write this, I crave this crêpe. I’m a complete Garden Goddess addict.
